Adventures in Sharn
Nathayne Russo was a man of passion. The son of a royal concubine, he was born to privilege, but had to fight for honor. He grew up in the palace of King Joash, but Nathayne had little to no contact with his father. Only the sons of the Queen were to spend time with the King. Desperately wanting to impress his father, Nathayne entered into training for the Elite Forest Rangers the day he came of age. He quickly rose in skill and recognition and became the youngest Ranger to complete training.
Nathayne was recognized for this achievement and finally got the acceptance he was looking for from his father. King Joash assigned Nathayne to his personal guard during his travels through the kingdom.
There was much unrest in the land. King Joash was not a cruel man, but he was harsh and unyielding. His lack of diplomacy caused a few Lords to attempt to take the crown. After a few months of battle they were soundly defeated. In the midst of it all Nathayne curried even more favor with the King with his prowess in battle.
During his travels through the kingdom as the King’s guard, Nathayne met a gypsy named Rosaline. The first time he saw her she was dancing around a bonfire, her curves silhouetted by the flames. She locked eyes with him and from that moment she had him. Certain that it was love, he married her within a month’s time. The King was unimpressed by his new daughter in law and said so. However, since Nathayne was not in line for the throne he was free to marry without the permission of the King.
Nathayne was completely in love with Rosaline and it seemed like she felt the same. The months following the wedding were the happiest in Nathayne’s life.
Six months after their marriage, Nathayne and his wife were invited to a masquerade ball celebrating the King’s 60th birthday. It was Rosaline’s first time in the palace. The night was beautiful and the king’s birthday was celebrated in style. In the morning shocking news swept through the city. Some of the Royal jewels that had been on display at the ball had been stolen. Nathayne and his wife were eating dinner when soldiers burst through the door of his home. Rosaline was charged with the theft. Nathayne began fighting off the guards until Rosaline stopped him. “You can’t single handedly fight every guard in the city,” she said. “I’ll go with them and we will figure out what’s going on.”
Nathayne immediately went to the King. Ignoring all protocol he stormed into the throne room and demanded that his wife be released and swore of her innocence. He caused quite a stir with the the nobles who were in attendance. King informed Nathayne that two reliable witnesses saw Rosaline pocketing the jewels. Nathayne refused to consider it. The witnesses were lying or mistaken. He swore on his own life that Rosaline was innocent. “Let her go and hold me in her place”. The King reluctantly agreed to the arrangement and sent word to the prison to release Rosaline. He then sent soldiers to search Nathayne’s home.
The nobles whispered amongst themselves as they all waited for the soldiers to report their findings. They did not have to wait long. Less than an hour passed when a soldier entered the throne room carrying a small purse Nathayne recognized as belonging to Rosaline His heart sank when the King emptied the contents onto his lap. The missing royal jewels.
The King sighed and looked at Nathayne. “I wish you wouldn’t have come to me so publicly,” he said softly and then louder to the room, “Nathayne Russo of the Elite Forest Rangers, having chosen to accept the fate of your wife Rosaline as your own, I herby charge you with the theft of my royal jewels and therefore as punishment for her crime you are to be exiled from the land of Argus. You have three days to be out of our borders after which, if you are discovered you will be immediately executed.” The King sat back down on the throne, looked at Nathayne and said “Godspeed.”
Rosaline was not in their ransacked home when Nathayne came to collect what he could. He had to leave immediately in order to be beyond the borders in three days. He never got the chance to hear Rosaline’s side of the story and now in exile he never would.
